Introduction

So, where are we heading with this lesson?

Appraising in the context of this lesson is all about critically judging how trustworthy the evidence you have is, along with its relevance. The lesson explores some pros and cons of different sources of insight with hints and tips to help you in your appraisal of them.

We’ll get you to reflect individually on the information that you use in your own work to help you make decisions, how reliable this is and what critical questions could challenge the validity of your information.

We also encourage you to take part in the community forum which provides the collaborative space to share your thinking and ideas with others. In this lesson we’ll ask you to reflect on the concept of ‘group think’ when people want to maintain harmony and minimise conflict, but which can result in irrational decision making. In the learning community, we’ll ask you to post a key factor that you think contributes to ‘group think’ and suggest a way to challenge it.

Review what others have posted to gain wider understanding on the theme from people professionals working in different contexts. Support the learning community by reading the contributions of others, 'liking' those you find helpful and add your unique reflections to the conversation.
