This week, the CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development, will open its doors to the Scottish HR community at the CIPD Scotland Annual Conference.

This one-day event, supported by headline sponsor NHS Scotland, will take place on 2 March 2017 at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. One of the leading events for HR and learning and development professionals in Scotland, this year’s conference will explore the theme of ‘Working Well in Scotland: Enabling Business Success’. It will focus on the core issues of engagement, well-being, leadership and resilience – the building blocks needed to create strong businesses and healthy workforces that are able to be productive and thrive during periods of change.

More than 400 professionals are expected to attend and will have the opportunity to meet with 30 suppliers of HR and L&D products and services in the exhibition area and hear practical case studies from leading employers including Santander, BT, Police Scotland and SubSea7. They will be able to network with fellow HR professionals throughout the event and attend various sessions exploring leadership and engagement, well-being and productivity, and resilience and agility.

Attendees will also have the chance to hear the latest thinking from high profile thought leaders on key workplace issues. Keynote speakers include:

  • Professor Sir Cary Cooper, CIPD President and 50th Anniversary Professor of Organisational Psychology and Health at Manchester Business School, will be discussing ‘The Wellbeing at work agenda - Enhancing mental capital’
  • Dr Chia-Jung Tsay, Assistant Professor of Organisational Behaviour at UCL School of Management will be discussing ‘Perception and Decision-Making in Leaders – Tackling Bias for Better Business  Decisions’
  • CIPD Chief Executive Peter Cheese will be discussing ‘The Future of HR’
  • Professor Shane O’Mara, Professor of Experimental Brain Research at the Institute of Neuroscience, Trinity College, will be discussing ‘The Business Brain – Developing Organisational Resilience Through Neuroscience’

A new CIPD report, Working Well in Scotland: Three pillars for a flourishing workplace, is also being launched at the conference and explores the crucial role that HR professionals have in creating workplaces that can help people stay well at work and build resilience and agility in the face of major challenges at work and beyond.

Dr John McGurk, Head of Scotland for CIPD and author of the report, will open the event. He comments: “This year’s conference is focused on recognising that employee well-being has a key role to play in helping Scotland flourish in a frenetic, and often perplexing, world. Inspiring and engaging leaders who understand that a workforce that is well, works well, will help their organisation to be more productive and more able to flex with whatever the future holds. HR and learning and development professionals are at the heart of this debate and we’re pleased to be able to bring together an event that is packed with the inspiration, advice and tools that these professionals need to build an effective well-being strategy.”

“We’re also delighted to welcome NHS Scotland as the headline sponsor of this year’s conference. Its key initiatives such as the Healthy Working Lives, Fit for Work Scotland and the Fair Work Convention are crucial for helping employers to create safer, healthier and more motivated workforces.”
